L'Insalata Ricca Restorante

Sitting at "our" salad restaurant in Rome. Unfortunately Holland lost the night we last ate here.

Martin at Statzione Genova

The old dock where many famous people used to arrive and where the EPAC conference dinner was. Martin happily poses for me.

The Rock

You feel as if this rock is just looking down on you wherever you go at ESRF. It is there out the window over breakfast lunch and dinner and when ever you step out of a lab door.

Twilight at ESRF

Another dramatic view around the lab at ESRF. Here you can see a bluff hanging over the lab at twilight.

ILL reactor

Here is the 54 MW nuetron source reactor through the break in the ESRF storage ring building roof.

ESRF from on-top of booster tunnel

Well, the booster RF is playing up, window is maybe leaking, so no more machine playing for the day. Better finish off my poster for EPAC.

ESRF at Grenoble

Machine studies at 15.00, but first a tourist trip to the Bastille. Here is a birds eye view of the lab next to the river.

Dourdan from the hotel

So, the hotel is on a hill just a short walk from the town. Possibly the cathedral is visible in this shot taken looking northwest towards the old town centre. The lectures are very thorogh and there are lots of calculations to make things to try when I get back to the lab.

Notre Dame by night

Paris looks after its tourists by lighting up its landmarks at night. This is the view just at the Metro exit at Saint-Michel Notre Dame.

Sunset in the French country side

It is nice and late when the Sun sets in France these days, a nice jump from the Melbourne relative dark. This shot was taken just before 21:30.

French workers

Civilised or primitive? You decide. Hundreds (thousands?) of passengers like me were made to wait from 06:30 till 07:25 in cramped quarters at CDG Paris while the immigration officials did smething other than work. Do they start at 07:30? Were they on a coffee break? Strike? They got a big sarcastic cheers when they climbed into their booths.

JSS dinner at Melbourne Town Hall

Mark Raper on the big screen during a speech at the Jesuit Social Service fund raising dinner. "Experience is only half an experience," he quote Goete meaning that you need to reflect on life as well.

Beam keeps on going around

Another Saturday night at the lab and the beam just keeps on circulating, 1.4 million times per second...

Blue and green at Monash

As I walk across Monash campus to get my heart rate monitor for a 24 hour test, the sky is perfectly clear and blue and despite the drought, the grass is nice and green.

Unimelb crest

Ok, this is getting out of control, I know, but here it is The University of Melbourne Crest on the Law Faculty builing. We held the accel08 workshop on the top floor of this building in April.

Looks quite thin and fragile from certain angles. The gold colour also makes it seem malleable to me, knowing how gold can easily be shaped and flattened.

Because I can

Not a good reason, I know, but if you don't get excited even in the beginning, what kind of a boring unplayful mind do you have? This is simply my book and jacket sitting on the seat on the train on the way into the city to a meeting at unimelb.

Nikon D200 coming to Europe again

The newish SLR toy is coming to Europe again from 26 May to 29 June, 2008. I have a few weeks work and some r&r in Paris, London, Grenoble, Berlin, Lund, Dunbar, Rome and Genova. Susana and I will be meeting up in a few places, so it should be a great trip!

Me after my first mobile email blog

Can you see the satisfaction written all over my face?
